Letter: Alaskans, don't jump off the roof

Posted: February 11, 2014 - 1:00am

Alaskans need to be on high alert when Gov. Sean Parnell starts talking about using public money to fund private schools.

Americans for Prosperity, aka the Koch Brothers, wrote the blueprint for Republicans to follow on this issue, and it appeared on Jan. 26 in the Anchorage Daily News under the title, “Time for Alaskans to have school choice.”

Rod McCoy, in a Feb. 10 Juneau Empire column, eloquently lays out the case for maintaining the status quo of public funding for public education, as opposed to Gov. Parnell’s pitch to take the extreme step of changing Alaska’s constitution to use public money for private schools. You don’t have to dig far to find the fingerprints of Charles and David Koch all over this.

These two men have unlimited wealth and a maniacal agenda to reshape our democracy in their image. They contribute heavily to Republican candidates, then they come calling state by state to get their pound of political flesh. They roil up state legislatures across the country with their divisive agenda.

What we need is transparency. If the richest state in the union is not enthusiastically investing in the education of our children, then it is a philosophical issue and not a financial one. The question has to be, “Why would you want Alaskan children to have less than the very best education we can afford? Why did the Republicans in the Legislature support this de facto attack on our kids’ futures? What would their moms say?” To put it another way, “If the Koch Brothers jumped off a roof, would you do it, too?”

Evidently, when the Koch brothers tell Republicans to jump off the roof, they jump, but this is a democracy and we, the citizens, need to speak up now.

Fairbanks Refinery

The Koch Brothers have been active in shaping the politics of Alaska through their funding of the American Legislative Exchange Council. That organization's attacks on voting rights, public schools, health insurance policy and reproductive fairness for poor women are all underwritten with Koch Bucks.

The Koch brothers have other interests in Alaska. They've done business here for years. This week, while buying more than $100,000 in attack ads opposing health care, they announced plans to close the Flint Hills refinery in Fairbanks. This has huge effect on not just the city of Fairbanks' tax rolls, and 80 employees' jobs, but it may put cargo planes in a pinch without jet fuel. And what will the railroad do with nothing to fill all those tank cars? This is far-reaching and we're going to feel it (although it won't amount to a pimple on a pea under the mattresses of the Koch brothers).

Our Washington, D.C., delegation and the governor all made sure to let Alaskans know they thought this closure was a bad idea.

Funny that some candidates for U.S. Senate, namely Dan Sullivan and Mead Treadwell, are seemingly mute. They want Koch money to run ads on their behalf during the general election.

Koch got your tongue, fellas?
