Letter: Alaskans, don't jump off the roof

Alaskans need to be on high alert when Gov. Sean Parnell starts talking about using public money to fund private schools.

Americans for Prosperity, aka the Koch Brothers, wrote the blueprint for Republicans to follow on this issue, and it appeared on Jan. 26 in the Anchorage Daily News under the title, “Time for Alaskans to have school choice.”

Rod McCoy, in a Feb. 10 Juneau Empire column, eloquently lays out the case for maintaining the status quo of public funding for public education, as opposed to Gov. Parnell’s pitch to take the extreme step of changing Alaska’s constitution to use public money for private schools. You don’t have to dig far to find the fingerprints of Charles and David Koch all over this.

These two men have unlimited wealth and a maniacal agenda to reshape our democracy in their image. They contribute heavily to Republican candidates, then they come calling state by state to get their pound of political flesh. They roil up state legislatures across the country with their divisive agenda.

What we need is transparency. If the richest state in the union is not enthusiastically investing in the education of our children, then it is a philosophical issue and not a financial one. The question has to be, “Why would you want Alaskan children to have less than the very best education we can afford? Why did the Republicans in the Legislature support this de facto attack on our kids’ futures? What would their moms say?” To put it another way, “If the Koch Brothers jumped off a roof, would you do it, too?”

Evidently, when the Koch brothers tell Republicans to jump off the roof, they jump, but this is a democracy and we, the citizens, need to speak up now.
