Letter: Haven House worth supporting

Haven House is not a halfway house. It is a whole and holy home for neighbors in need. For the past year, our church has had the privilege of providing office space for Haven House as it raised the funds and built the infrastructure necessary to sustain a faithful and effective program that will assist women who are returning to our community after incarceration. The re-entry challenges our fellow citizens face are daunting. With Haven House’s support, the women who will be living there will have a much greater chance of finding employment and engaging in productive participation in society. The women that Haven House has the potential to help will be returning to our community with or without Haven House’s assistance. With it, their prospects are brighter. Haven House is an idea worthy of our community’s support, wherever it is located. The house that a patron has provided is a fine place for women to start a new chapter of their lives. We don’t choose our neighbors, but we can choose to love them. Doing so is the mark of a compassionate community. It is the kind of community Juneau aspires to be.
