Letter: Affordable Care Act unfair to small businesses

It is fundamentally unfair for businesses to be forced to shoulder yet another tax burden. The health insurance tax provision within the Affordable Care Act is a tax that we at Miles D. Enright Co. Inc., firmly oppose.

Current pressures, including government regulations and fees, already make it difficult to remain in business and contribute to our communities. This tax was implemented at the beginning of the year, and the resulting rise in healthcare costs likely will force many small businesses to close their doors.

Although this tax has been levied on health insurance companies, our small business and others like it are expected to be impacted by higher premiums. Right now, my husband is the only one receiving insurance benefits. Due to rising costs, however, we are contemplating dropping his plan and simply paying for healthcare out of pocket as needed. We simply cannot afford an increase in health insurance costs, especially considering that his current plan doesn’t cover many of our expenses. As a result, we end up paying out of pocket anyway.

Our construction company has been family-owned and operated since 1980 and plays a significant role in our local community. We hope that our elected officials in Washington, D.C. are able to think outside the Beltway and can understand the hardships that small businesses face in today’s economy. Please join us in urging them to vote in favor of the Jobs and Premium Protection Act. If enacted, this bill will repeal the health insurance tax, and hopefully it will save small businesses here in Alaska and throughout the United States.
