Letter to the Editor: Juneau School board hired the wrong person

I was stunned by the Juneau School Board’s decision to reject a well-qualified local candidate for superintendent in favor of a Californian who has limited teaching experience, no superintendent experience, and no discernible understanding of our community. Like many Alaska institutions, the school board showed a disturbing lack of faith in those who grow up and go to school in Alaska.

How can we ask our children to stay and work here if we won’t hire them for the top jobs? And how can we tell ourselves that institutional racism no longer exists?
