Letter: Senior tax exemption

A great deal of attention has been given to the sales tax exemption for seniors. That exemption was given as a privilege and now seems to be viewed as an entitlement. The exemption remains on food. Projections claim that the number of seniors will be increasing. More demands will be made on tax revenues.

Quality of life is often mentioned as one of Juneau’s main attractions. Would seniors not be better served if there were community classes on caregiving, expanded day activities, help given to assisted living arrangements? Programs and infrastructure for the entire community seem to make more sense than a tax exemption for seniors.
