Letter: Legislature needs new leadership

This upcoming election is particularly important for Alaska. Big changes are in store for all of us. Sadly, for some time now our Legislature has not been up to the job of preparing for these changes. Session after session and they continue to kick the budget can down the road. There isn’t a lot of road left. The state House and Senate are held hostage by members who value their ideological purity over doing the state’s business. Luckily, we finally have a governor who sees the problem and is trying hard to get us out of this mess. One definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result. We owe it to ourselves and our grandchildren to elect a new Legislature that will put the hostage-takers in the minority where they belong and work with the governor. Rep. Cathy Muñoz is a kind and generous person, but some of the choices she has made while in the Legislature have been poor. Justin Parish is ready, willing and able to supply some of the fresh energy we need. Please support Justin Parish and let’s elect a Legislature that will finally move Alaska forward. Further on the topic of legislators, maybe U.S. Sen. Murkowski could take some time from her busy schedule bagging groceries and vote on the nomination of Judge Merrick Garland to the U.S. Supreme Court. That’s what the U.S. Senate is supposed to do under the Constitution.
