Jebe beholden to no one

Membership on the Assembly is a privilege that we should award to those who will listen, learn and decide — not a right of past involvement on the assembly. We need to realize that the prior involvements of both candidates indicate their approaches to the role of mayor.

A new “face” with some definite goals — expanded medical care, more recreation options, and increased educational opportunities — would provide the energy to approach our concerns with leadership of a different style.

'I just can't vote for Merrill Sanford for Mayor!'

As I watched Merrill Sanford during the Question and Answer session sponsored by the League of Women Voters last week, I was impressed by some of his heartfelt delivery. But I was also amazed at his expressing fondness for some aspects of Juneau life that his voting record simply has not supported. I guess it is politics to reach out to voters who have not paid attention to how steadfast and predictably Mr. Sanford has commented, questioned, and voted during his tenure in the Juneau Assembly.

National Voter Registration Day

Tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 25 is designated as National Voter Registration Day in the United States.

This opportunity will be presented to our community as well. The League of Women Voters will have a presence at IGA Foodland from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. tomorrow. This is another opportunity for you to register to vote or to change your address of record for voting.

Support Merrill Sanford for Mayor

This letter is in support of Merrill Sanford for Mayor. I have worked with Merrill for years in Capital City Fire Rescue and have known him to be fair and honest in his leadership, a good communicator, and a man who leads thru team work. One thing for sure, if you are working with Merrill, you are on a team! If disagreement arose, I always felt that Merrill gave his full attention to the issue, actively trying to find compromise. In short, a vote for Merrill is a vote for the community.

Vote to support the bond, continue the sales tax

I intend to vote in favor of the bond and the continuation of the 1% sales tax that will be decided in the upcoming municipal election. I agree with some of the criticism of this funding proposal—in a perfect world our existing facilities would be upgraded before we invest in new projects. But we all know that will never happen. There will always be old sewer lines to replace or buildings to renovate.

Muldoon for school board

This letter is in support for Will Muldoon for Juneau School Board. I serve with Will on the KTOO Board. Will comes to meetings prepared, his thinking is insightful and his commitment to the Juneau community is huge. He graduated from Juneau schools. He can think outside the box. He is firmly grounded in all the “new technology” that many of us have difficulty navigating. Will can give the school board a fresh, intelligent perspective that will deeply benefit Juneau and its kids. Please join me in voting for Will Muldoon for Juneau School Board.

Don't support bond, sales tax measures

At a recent Chamber meeting several Assembly members gave a presentation on the upcoming bond and sales tax ballot measures. Based on this presentation I do not believe our City Assembly and city manager have a clue how important our facilities and equipment are that city employees use to provide the services we have hired them to perform. They allow these facilities to deteriorate to the point where they ask us to pass bond issues and sales tax revenues to maintain them.

There are no quick fixes - reelect Obama

There is a lot of concern about our faltering economy. Job loss, the shifting of jobs overseas, stagnant consumer demand and loss of production; these and more have been cited as evidence of our poor economy. Many feel that, given the past four years of the Obama administration, these problems should have been overcome and our economy ought to be comfortably sailing into this decade. But just how long does it take to recover from the worst recession since the Great Depression?

I am writing in regards to a hit and run! Yes, a hit and run! A few years ago I wrote an article about my close call of being ran over by a car while walking across the crosswalk — and my light was green. So this time it was a hit and run and there were others who saw this happen!
