Here we go again. Local gas prices rising three to four cents every day. These companies are not getting fuel delivers every day. By the way I just checked Seattle gas prices on line. I’ll use Safeway since we have one here in Juneau; $4.09 per gallon for regular in Seattle. It costs a nickel a gallon to deliver gas from Seattle to Juneau. Interesting mark up.

There was a moving and thought provoking article in last Sunday’s paper. It was titled “Juneau’s Most Vulnerable Woman Remembered.” It brought to the forefront the struggles of homeless people in Juneau.

There were two quotes in the article, which showed much disrespect for the memory of Gloria Plummer which caused deep hurt, anxiety and upset among her family in Juneau, Sitka and Angoon. It also caused much upset among her extended family of Angoon. One sister who read these words found them so graphically reprehensible that she is still crying over it.

The League of Women Voters grew out of the long fight to win women the right to vote and has been advocating for the rights of all citizens for more than 90 years. In 1992, League members across the nation studied health care policy, and out if that study came a commitment to work for access to quality health care for all regardless of gender. The League also has a strong commitment and belief that public policy in a diverse society must affirm the right of individuals to make their own reproductive choices.

Yesterday Gov. Sean Parnell said that we shouldn’t lower taxes without pledges of new investment. Great. However, as I understand it, “pledges” are not legally binding, and there is no time frame for new investment. A more disturbing quote comes from Senate Finance Committee Chair, Bert Stedman, regarding the progressivity clause in ACES. He is now agreeing that Alaska is taking too much when oil is high. It costs pretty much the same thing to get a barrel of oil to market if the price is $35/barrel as it does if the price is $125/barrel.
