Moral and spiritual bankruptcy

The health care legislation called the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act also known as Obamacare should be of concern to all of us. On the surface, there are many reasons to oppose this legislation but I fear we don’t know half the story since it doesn’t go into effect until 2014 and many of the regulations implementing its provisions are yet to be promulgated. From the little that has already been done we can see the looming disaster that awaits our present health care system and economy. In addition to that are serious moral and ethical problems sure to arise.

Twilight Zone

Last election, President Barack Obama presented himself to the people as the reincarnation of Martin Luther King Jr. This election he seems to have re-invented himself as an Apostle of Christ claiming, at the National Prayer Breakfast last week, that his economic policies are in line with Jesus’ teachings. He has thus gone from the laughable to the blasphemous.

Ethics and the Board of Game

As the Corey Rossi scandal unfolds, it now seems to be encompassing the Board of Game via present member, Cliff Judkins, and former member, Bob Bell. According to Craig Medred in the Alaska Dispatch, it seems they wanted the Fish & Game biologist for the area to bend the rules so they could bring home some horns from a musk ox subsistence hunt, something currently not permitted. Had it not been for the integrity of the biologist, it might have happened.

Corporations aren't people - support these pieces of legislation

I enthusiastically support Alaska House Bill 244 and House Joint Resolution 33. HB 244 is an act “providing that for-profit corporations and limited liability companies organized in this state are not persons for purposes of influencing the outcomes of public office elections, initiatives, referendums, or recalls.” HRJ 33 urges the U.S.

Corporations are not people! Support HB 244

I am a staunch supporter of House Bill 244, which was introduced in the Alaska House by Rep. Scott Kawasaki.

The bill reads: “An act providing that for-profit corporations and limited liability companies organized in this state are not persons for the purposes of influencing the outcomes of public office elections, initiatives, referendums, or recalls. We do not believe that corporations are people nor should they have the ability to influence our elections.”

State policies are bad for our wildlife

It would seem to this casual observer of various news reporting from around Alaska that the rather invasive nature of the Alaska Department of Fish & Game management tree does require an extensive weeding out as well as a good hard shaking from the top!

Word on the street has it that all the honest and hardworking biologists in Juneau and around the state are loath to blow any alarm whistles for real fear of jeopardizing the very wildlife careers they love and pursue.

The plea deal is wrong

For years I have read in the Empire of pedophiles receiving weak sentences, and I’ve regretted the message that sends to their victims and to all victims of sexual abuse. I have remained silent.

Now, I am incensed over a charge of sexual abuse of a minor being dismissed in a plea deal (see Thursday’s Empire). To ever let that charge go with a judicial formality minimizes the enormity of the crime.

A modest proposal for educating our youth

I was at the Juneau School District Budget Proposal meeting on Tuesday, and I am confused by the angry response to our governor. As a teacher I am grateful to our governor’s leadership in a time when corrupt politicians with lobbying ties are bankrupting schools across the country to move money into the pockets of multinationals.

War on religious freedom

Regarding the Obama administration’s announcement Friday that all religious organizations will have until August 1, 2013 to provide free sterilization and birth control to their employees:

U.S. President Barack Obama’s declaration of war on religious freedom is becoming more bold and militant by the day.

The Obama administration’s decision to force faith-based entities like hospitals and universities to provide employees with free sterilization and abortifacient birth control drugs as of August 1, 2013 is literally unconscionable.

Rossi charges

On Thursday of this past week it was in the news that Corey Rossi, Director of the Division of Wildlife Conservation has been charged with 12 charges of taking bears illegally.

This man was appointed to his position by Gov. Sean Parnell. Essentially, he is charged with poaching. The following day, on Friday, the Governor’s Office had no comment regarding these charges. OK, so here is a comment.
