Disrespect

First off, thank you to the Juneau Jazz & Classics for bringing the tremendous talent Booker T. Jones to Juneau. What a rare treat it was to experience such a blues legend in person. I have to say however, that I was deeply disappointed by the blatant disrespect the man was shown by the Juneau crowd this evening. Throughout the entirety of the show, people all around me talked loudly, essentially ignoring the incredible performance before us. I understand that occasionally something must be shared, but leaning in close and speaking quietly will do the trick.

Parents and grandparents - protect school nurses from cutbacks

It is time for the parents and grandparents of students in the Juneau School District to stand up to the absolutely ludicrous decision made by the District administration in firing three more school nurses and replacing them and the two fired last year with “health assistants.”

Thanks for the LGBTQ series

There are a great many people in this community who want to thank you and your staff, especially Melissa Griffiths, for the series of articles on the subject of LGBTQ. We appreciate the fact that the choice to run this series was a brave one on your part, and we thank you for taking the step regardless of the possible negative feedback.

It is never easy or comfortable to take a risk, but history tells us this is how progress is made. You and others have opened the door for discussion which is bound to bring greater understanding.

Same sex marriage should not be legalized

The frequency of the pro-homosexual articles seen in Juneau Empire recently has excluded two important reasons why same sex marriage should not be legalized.

The first reason is God designed marriage to be between a man and women.

“6 But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female.’ 7 ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. (Mark 10:6-7, New King James version)

According to the Bible, homosexuality is immoral and is one of many sins that will keep mankind out of heaven.

Don't raise utility rates, just be careful where you spend city money

There is a woman in Juneau I have concocted. I know no real woman who’s the one I have made up, but she stands for many residents. I think of her as “The Single Mom Who Lives in a Trailer House.” She might not; she could have a very small apartment or even, though not likely, a tiny house, but she has at least two young children and no funds other than her low-paying job.

An 'F' on this report card

As young Alaskan business owners, we would be very appreciative of an organization like the State Chamber of Commerce to represent our business interests. However, it seems that the Chamber has no regard for the interests of Alaskan businesses. If they did, their annual “Business Report Card” would represent a variety of industries.

Affordable Living crisis

In the Juneau Empire today (April 26), I read about a 2-bedroom home for rent for $2000, first and last, plus utilities (heat $150, electricity $150, Cable $99, Telephone $45, Internet $99, garbage $75). Another 3-bedroom, $2,100, $2,500 deposit, $400 a month estimated utilities. Craigslist offered a 3-bedroom at $2200 a month, 1 bedroom, 1 bath $1,450. There were four homes available for rent.

This is a time for leadership

Leadership is defined as “the actions of leading a group of people or an organization”. Our CBJ proposed 2014 budget is built on a very small mil levy increase on property assessments leading to a slight increase in property taxes.

Put the proposed mil levy in the historical perspective of the past 20 years: 1995 @ 14.08 mil levy to a low in 2007 of 10.17; 2010 @ 10.60 and 2013 of 10.55. The proposed mil levy for 2014 is 10.89 which is just 77.3% of the 1995 rate!
