Government meetings: April 4-7

• The Assembly Committee of the Whole meets at 6 p.m. Monday in the Assembly chambers. It will hear reports from the Alaska Department of Labor on population trends in Southeast and Juneau and the Juneau Afterschool Coalition.

• The Lands Committee will meet prior to that at 5 p.m. Monday to take action on west Juneau reservoir site communication towers leases and FY12 funding for the affordable housing coordinator.

• Public Works and facilities meets at noon in the Assembly chambers to take action on the Amalga launch ramp de-appropriation and airport appropriations.

• The Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Assembly chambers.

• The Juneau School District Board of Education meets at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for a worksession with the University of Alaska Southeast at Juneau-Douglas High School, room 206. It will convene its regular meeting at 6:15 p.m. in the JDHS library.

• The Assembly finance committee meets at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the Assembly chambers.

• The deadline to submit letters of interest with a resume for consideration of appointment to the District 2 Assembly seat currently held by Assemblymember Jonathan Anderson is at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

• Docks and Harbors will hold a special board meeting for emergency repairs to DeHart’s Marina at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Aurora Harbor office conference room.

• The AJ Mine Advisory Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Assembly chambers for committee discussion on what it wants to put in a report to the Assembly.

This Day in Juneau History: Jan. 22, 1987

On Jan. 22, 1987, Gov. Steve Cowper prepared to discuss the final part of his fiscal plan: budget cuts. The total amount suggested to be cut by his temporary cabinet was $300 million, which tore funding from a variety of different programs. However, although what propositions Cowper accepted were still a mystery, Press Secretary David Ramseur confirmed that the cuts he did accept totaled at about $200 million. Cowper was to give a speech directly to the Alaska Legislature discussing the specifics of his recommended cuts.

Man caught with 3 pounds of meth on Southeast Alaska-bound ferry sentenced to 20 months

A 21-year-old man who was caught transporting three pounds of methamphetamine — reportedly the largest seizure in Southeast Alaska in at least 10 years— on the ferry between Bellingham and Ketchikan last May was “a patsy, plan and simple,” his defense attorney argued.
