Mendenhall Loop Road will close at 6 p.m. tonight so workers can remove the pedestrian bridge which crosses it, according to a release from the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities.
The bridge is located approximately one mile northeast of Mendenhall Loop Road's intersection with Egan Drive.
The closure will affect traffic traveling both north and south. The release states Mendenhall Loop Road will be closed “until the pedestrian bridge is removed,” but does not give an exact time.
Traffic will be rerouted to side streets during the closure.
According to the release, an overheight vehicle struck the bridge Wednesday night and caused the damage. The release does not state when the bridge is expected to be back in place.
