Eaglecrest manager set to become head of Public Works

The manager of Eaglecrest Ski Area will take over as the director of the City and Borough of Juneau’s Public Works department in July, according to a release from the city.

Current Director Joe Buck announced his intention to retire effective July 3, the release states. Buck’s deputy director, Scott Jeffers, also announced his retirement, which will be effective April 29. Jeffers has worked for the city for 35 years, the release states.

“Public Works is one of the most important departments in the city,” stated City Manager Rod Swope in the release. “Joe has done an outstanding job in managing the department for the past nine years and it was with regret that I learned of his decision to retire. He will definitely be missed.”

Under the transition plan announced by the city, Kirk Duncan will leave his post at Eaglecrest to become deputy director of Public Works when Jeffers leaves, then will transition into the top job there July 3.

“Kirk is very committed to the community and well suited for this job,” Swope stated in the release.“He has proven to be an outstanding manager with excellent supervisory skills and the experience of managing a large public service operation. He knows how to get things done. Kirk knows what it takes to get projects designed, funded, bid, constructed, and the importance of maintaining them. I feel fortunate that someone local with his proven skills, experience, and commitment to Juneau will be taking over this important and challenging position.”

The release did not specify a plan to fill the top job at Eaglecrest or the deputy director’s slot at Public Works.
