A Juneau man was arraigned in Juneau District Court on Tuesday for an incident involving an attempt to take a small child from his mother.
Raphael Flores, 46, was charged third-degree assault, a class ‘C’ felony and with resisting arrest, a class ‘A’ misdemeanor. Alcohol was believed to be a factor, according to police reports.
Judge Keith Levy continued a $10,000 cash performance bond and set a preliminary hearing for April 27.
Public defender Eric Hedland did not oppose the bond.
According to police and court documents, Flores approached a 20-year-old woman and her 5-year-old son walking in the 6500 block of Glacier Highway.
Flores grabbed the child’s hand and tried to take him from the area.
The child’s father saw the events unfolding and intervened.
Flores pulled a knife and used it in a threatening manner, causing the father to back away.
Another man with Flores pulled him away from the family and they left the area.
Flores was later found at a trailer in the area where the initial incident took place, where he was taken into custody and lodged at Lemon Creek Correctional Center.
If Flores makes bail he is not to contact the victim or victim’s immediate family, leave the city, possess or consume alcohol or go where it is sold or served as the primary item, must not violate any laws and must attend court hearings.
If indicted by a grand jury, Flores’ case would move upstairs to the jurisdiction of Juneau Superior Court.
