'Free Moccasins' benefit for Sky Dunlap family tonight

Perseverance Theatre to host multi-artistic endeavors at 7:30 p.m.

A remembrance of the life of Sky Dunlap will be held tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Perseverance Theatre, 914 East 3rd Street in downtown Douglas. Organizers said it will be a multi-artistic evening of performances.

Sky’s close friend Seneca Harper has organized a virtual who’s who of artists who had performed with or knew Dunlap personally.

Tonight’s performers include Collette Costa, Teri Tibbett, Gene Tagaban, Brett Dillingham, Shona Strauser, Christy Na Mee Erikson, Nahaan, Lily Hudson, Becky Engstrom, Kim Andree, Tyee Dunlap, Kahdushan Dunlap, Austin Tagaban, Ricky Tagaban, and Harper.

“Everyone is really excited to pay respect to Sky in a way that she would have enjoyed,” Harper said. “Through poetry, and song and dance. For me, it is a time to put sorrow briefly aside and it is a time to laugh. To laugh like Sky would if she were watching or performing tonight.”

The benefit is to not only remember the woman who’s booming laughter and stage talents affected so many, but to also help the family with costs associated with Dunlap’s funeral and with an investigation into her death in Seattle.

An additional memorial service and celebration of Dunlap's life will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, at the Tlingit and Haida Community Center, 3235 Hospital Drive. Donations in Dunlap’s name may be made to the Sakara "Sky" Dunlap Memorial Fund at any Wells Fargo bank.
