Many SE agencies lose tax exemptions

The Internal Revenue Service reports that more than 100 organizations in Southeast Alaska have lost their tax-exempt statuses. This list can be found at juneauempire.com.

The list contains various types of nonprofits, including conservation and volunteer firefighter agencies.

The IRS states these agencies lost their tax-exempt statuses due to failure to legally file required annual reports for three consecutive years. This is a requirement of the Pension Protection Act of 2007, which imposed the first filing requirement in 2007.

IRS spokesman Bill Brunson believes most of the agencies on the list did not file because they’re no longer operational or dormant. He stresses that if they are still active, they need to file to retrieve their tax-exemptions.

Organizations can apply for reinstatement, including retroactive reinstatement, through the IRS website at http://1.usa.gov/mHTSpU or by calling (800) 829-1040.
