Doll resigns from Assembly

Assemblyman Bob Doll submitted his letter of resignation from the Assembly Friday morning.

Doll will end his second term a few months early and head to Anacortes, Wash., with his wife Andrea. His last day is July 11, at the close of the Assembly meeting.

“Well, for a long time my wife and I have been contemplating being closer to our grandchildren. We have three at the moment and two more on the way and they all live in Seattle,” he said. “We also have some financial reasons for doing it, but the family is the biggest part.”

“I would like your readers to know Andrea and I regret leaving a great deal,” Doll said. “We have planted roots in Juneau deeper than in any community we’ve ever lived. We’ve lived in seven or eight communities all over the country. If it were only us we had to consider, we’d be here forever. I would also like to express my gratitude to the citizens of Juneau and to the staff at CBJ for their support in many ways. I know Andrea feels the same way.”

Mayor Bruce Botelho said the Assembly will refill Doll’s seat before the next election. He said he intends to present a name to the Assembly of someone who could fill the seat, but would not be interested in running in the next election.

“We’re in a little bit different of a situation than we were two months ago,” Botelho said, adding that the Assembly may have a different view of how it would like to fill the seat.

He said he didn’t want to leave it open too long because of the stipulations in city charter regarding a quorum for votes.

“I’m saddened to see him leave,” Botelho said. “I think he’s been a great voice on the Assembly. He is someone who brings both a depth of experience, a person who understands systems well and I think has brought that background of skills to the Assembly.”
