Goldbelt treasurer takes over as chair

Karen Taug, newly elected chairwoman of Goldbelt, Inc.

There’s been an unexpected change at the top spot of Goldbelt, Inc.’s board of directors.

Del Cesar has stepped down after only a month as chairman.

“Unfortunately, due to health reasons, I am not able to continue the hectic pace required of the Chairman of the Board,” Cesar said in a release. “I am grateful to have been given this opportunity, and it is with regret that I must step down at this time.”

Upon his announcement, the board elected Karen A. Taug to replace him.

Taug recently began her second board term and was elected as treasurer at the June 4 annual meeting — the same date Cesar had been selected as chairman. He will stay on the board, serving the remainder of his two-year term.

Taug looks forward to her new leadership role, saying although it was certainly unexpected, it looks to be rewarding and challenging, as the board has some new plans in its sight.

“It’s going to be interesting,” she said.

Taug said one big priority for the board is diversification and more permanent job development. She said the current bulk of the corporation’s revenues come from government contracting, while tourism opportunities account for more than 100 seasonal jobs locally.

“What I would like to work toward is to become more diversified and try to develop something in Southeast Alaska where we can provide more year-round employment,” said Taug.

“We’re looking to diversify and investigate developments for Southeast Alaska in whatever form that materializes. We’re not sure what that may be at this point but we’re looking at options,” she said.

Taug said the first order of business is to find a permanent president and chief executive officer to replace Gary Droubay, who has just retired.

Taug is the controller for Southeast Regional Health Consortium. She originally ran for the Goldbelt board in 2008.

Board member Kathy Polk will take over as treasurer. Other positions among the nine-member board include Randy Wanamaker as vice chairman and Trudy Skan as corporate secretary.
