Completion of the final details to put Petco and OfficeMax into Nugget Mall could be just around the corner.
Ted Tollefson of the mall’s management partners said they are working very closely with the two retail chains. While the leases still need to be signed, he said he is confident this will be done shortly.
Juneau Community Development Director Dale Pernula said the city issued a building permit for Petco. He said OfficeMax has submitted its plans and the department is now waiting for some additional information. He expects the final permit will be issued soon.
Tollefson said Staples had previously looked at Nugget Mall, but no deal could be reached.
Representatives for Petco and OfficeMax could not be reached for comment.

Yes they do, I think the are pretty nice stores. With all the pets here in JNU they sould do well.
Petco
They are actually offer a wide variety of fish, and other pets such as birds etc... plus all the supplies you would come to expect from a giant pet store such as this. Ive been in a few in Oregon and they are close to the size of Costco. Cant imagine the fish store across the street from the mall will appreciate the new business. I'm sure they will probably say something about how it will put them out of business.
They're barely in business
They're barely in business anyway.
Too bad about Dick's Sporting Goods...
Oh well, I suppose a Pet store and Office Supplies are nice also. Dick's Sporting Goods would have been better, but I understand why they were turned down. The Nugget Alaskan Outfitter would have had a tough time and they are owned by the mall owners. Oh well, don't give up Dick's, you'll find a spot in town if you keep looking.
kpawsuh, you have no idea how the Wee Fishie Shoppe
is doing business wise. The very fact that you made that stupid statement shows how ignorant you are. Some people in this town are so quick to condemn and attack the small businesses forgetting that it's those small businesses that helped Juneau grow. You'd probably trade your dog for a beer, you know, cause you're such a loyal kinda person. I'm loyal to the small businesses in this town and am sad to see more and more of them closing down; of course that doesn't mean the Wee Fishie Shoppe will close down. I think they'll do just fine.
What about real stores like Old Navy?
Come on, does Juneau really need a PETCO or OfficeMax? We have Wee Fishie and Office Plus and Capital Office Supply... what about the real stores they have down south like Old Navy or GAP. PETCO and OfficeMax are a waste of space!
sorry but...
alaskaniam you must not go to capital office supply often , because their out of buisness
Clueless
juneau.1034, you're clueless because Capital Office Supply is still very much in business.
I will continue to support the LOCALLY OWNED businesses, yes, even if it costs me a bit more money!

Wow there are some spirited individuals here. Don't know exactly who that beer comment was pointed at but that was inappropriate. Competition has its consequences. That's what i was saying, an you know as for loyalty my family has been here in juneau for 90 years. I'd say sticking it out here trying to make Juneau successful is something we know a bit about. Anywho, hope they put the fish shop at the end where Lyles is storing all that overflow at the end of the mall.

"locally owned" is a farce in a global economy
What does locally owned even mean? The Alaska PFD owns shares in PetSmart, and PetSmart drove most of the independent pet stores around Anchorage out of business. If it was PetSmart moving in here instead of Petco, you'd all be doing cartwheels if it made a lot of money and boosted your PFD amount. PetCo used to be publically traded and maybe the Alaska PFD invested in it back then. If you have any type of retirement account, a 401k, or mutual fund, you may have invested in Petco and never even knew. It could have been YOUR dollars causing it's eventual expansion into Juneau.
And for the rest of you "gonna hate it if it's not local" people, the Alaska PFD also owns shares in WAL-MART and HOME DEPOT. If you want to protest, don't file for your PFD next year. Others will shop there and potentially boost future PFD dividends.
So build your retirement funds on outside companies, shop local to try and assuage your guilt, and then retire out of town like everybody else because nobody can afford to retire in the land of 3 million dollar ice skating rinks that only 12 people use and expensive aquatic parks inaccessible to the poor kids in Lemon Creek.
Oh yeah, and don't forget that plastic shopping bags are immoral. Hopefully your retirement account isn't invested in the plastics or petrochemical industries. Oh wait... it is.
