Docks and Harbors chooses new harbormaster

Docks and Harbors will have a new harbormaster Oct. 1.

New port director Carl Uchytil has hired Dwight Tajon to fill Phil Benner’s job. Benner resigned for family reasons and will be moving to Florida. Benner has been harbormaster since 2009, and was interim port director after John Stone left and before Uchytil could begin his duties.

Tajon has been an employee of Docks and Harbors since 1988, growing through several positions of increasing responsibility, including laborer, harbor technician, harbor officer, and working for the past nine years as operations maintenance supervisor. He also held the collateral position as facility security officer from 2002-2009.

The harbormaster is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the city’s Docks and Harbors’ facilities including all harbors (Harris, Aurora, Douglas, Auke Bay), boat launch ramps (Amalga Harbor, Echo Cove, North Douglas), boat floats (Taku Harbor/Intermediate Vessel Float) and municipal cruise ship docks and associated loading zones.

“I was looking for a capable, experienced local individual with proven leadership skills with demonstrated ability to professionally interface with the public,” Uchytil stated in a release. “The Docks and Harbor Department is fortunate to have that individual in Dwight.”

Tajon stated in a release that “it will be an honor to take over the helm that Phil Benner has held. I do wish the circumstance were very different in Phil’s departure and wish him well as does the entire CBJ community.”
