Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, has announced the hiring of three staff members, including a new legislative assistant from Juneau.
Miles Baker, who until recently was a top aide to Senate Finance Committee Co-Chairman Bert Stedman, R-Sitka, is joining Murkowski after several years working for the Alaska Legislature.
Baker, a Juneau resident, will move to Washington, D.C., where he’ll work on finance and budgeting issues.
Baker began his professional career as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps serving with two units in Okinawa, Japan.
He graduated from West Anchorage High School and the U.S. Naval Academy, and received an Master of Business Administration degree from UCLA’s Anderson School of Business.
Also joining Murkowski’s staff are Tara L. Shaw, who will be her new legislative director.
Shaw comes to Murkowski from the Department of Homeland Security, but previously worked For Sens. Pete Domenici, R-New Mexico and George Voinovich, R-Ohio.
Also joining Murkowski’s staff as a legislative assistant is U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Warren Wright as a Coast Guard fellow working on issues involving the Department of Homeland Security and air and maritime issues. He’s been previously based in Kodiak for Bering Sea assignments.
In a press release announcing the hirings, Murkowski said the new staffers’ experience would help them to “hit the ground running on issues crucial to our unique state.”
An additional high profile vacancy, her fisheries aide, has yet to be filled, said spokesman Matthew Felling.
Murkowski’s senior staff members have been conducting an expedited search during the recess to replace Arne Fuglvog, he said. They expect to have a short list for the senator to consider next week.
