ADF&G halts goat hunting in part of Unit 4

Posted: September 28, 2011 - 4:43pm

The Alaska Department of Fish & Game has issued an emergency order to close the mountain goat hunting season at 11:59 p.m. Thursday for the Redoubt Bay-Necker Bay Zone portion of the Unit 4 registration goat hunt (RG150).

Biologists have set a maximum guideline harvest objective of six males or one female mountain goat allowed for this area. Three females have been harvested as of Tuesday.

The Department states that previous high harvests of female goats in this area have prompted this conservative harvest strategy. The emergency order is intended to prevent overharvest and consequential long-term effects on this goat population.
