Petco signed for Nugget Mall

Petco has now signed a lease and will move into Nugget Mall at the beginning of 2012, according to Ted Tollefson, co-owner of the mall’s partner and managing firm, Loveless/Tollefson Properties.

Tollefson said the store will be 11,651 square feet and situated right next to OfficeMax. He said both stores are hoping for a January opening.

Tollefson said the parties have been working on this deal for more than a year. Getting both the retailers in at once had been a part of that deal

The managers originally looked at Staples before signing a deal with OfficeMax. That deal paved the way for Petco to sign on as well.

“They are national names and hopefully will draw more people to the Nugget Mall,” Tollefson said.

He said the hope is that they will draw more than just customers. He hopes more national and regional tenants will take an interest in the location in the future.

Petco could not be reached for comment.

The national pet store will be situated right near Wee Fishie Shoppe, which is located in the mall parking lot on the same side as Petco. What the incoming store will mean for the local shop remains to be seen.

Wee Fishie Shoppe owners did not return comment by press time.

This Day in Juneau History: Feb. 23, 1987

On Feb. 23, 1987, Alaska House lawmakers voted 22-17 to transfer all of the $426 million from the Alaska budget reserve to the general fund to cover state bills. However, the clause that would have made the bill effective immediately after it was passed by both the Legislature and Gov. Steve Cowper was not passed, meaning that the bill will not go into effect until 90 days after Cowper’s signature and therefore not in time to stop a state cash flow crisis predicted to occur on March 9.
