JPD gets grant money for more officers

Posted: October 5, 2011 - 6:50pm

The Juneau Police Department recently received grant money to hire two new law enforcement officers through a U.S. Department of Justice program called Community Oriented Policing Services Hiring Program.

The Alaska congressional delegation announced Friday a host of communities across the state were awarded grants and contracts. JPD was one of the recipients of the COPS grants, and will receive $567,452 for the new officers.

Palmer, Sitka and Wasilla were also awarded grant money.

COPS is a competitive grant program that provides funding directly to law enforcement agencies having primary law enforcement authority to create and preserve jobs and to increase their community policing capacity and crime-prevention efforts, according to its website.

The program provided up to $1 billion in grant funding this year for the hiring and rehiring of additional career law enforcement officers.
