A new trial date has been set for the alleged killer of two Hoonah police officers.
John N. Marvin Jr., will be tried early next year.
Sitka Superior Court Judge David George on Monday scheduled the jury trial to begin Jan. 30, 2012 at the Dimond Courthouse. The trial was originally slated to begin Monday.
George also scheduled a second competency hearing for Marvin on Jan. 6., to determine whether Marvin is competent to stand trial.
Marvin, 46, is accused of shooting two Hoonah police officers, Anthony Wallace, 32, and Matthew Tokuoka, 39, to death in August 2010. Marvin has pleaded not guilty and faces two charges of first-degree murder and two charges of weapons misconduct.

Stop wasting my tax dollars defending this POS cop killer. I hate the thought of having to spend more money keeping his sorry ass in prison, but I'd rather pay to keep him behind bars for the rest of his life than take a chance of him getting out and shooting more cops.

What taxes do you pay that are being wasted here? If you want to keep him behind bars you must let the judicial process continue. The judge is doing all he can to keep this thing from blowing up on appeal. If they do not follow the letter of the law he will soon be out in public, possibly living next door to you or me. That would be much worse than delaying the trial for three months.
My big question is why schedule the competency hearing for early January where any delay could also delay the trial? Why not schedule the competency hearing for the here and now so if it needs to be rescheduled it may not interrupt the trial schedule?
Whatever it takes...
Took place August 30, 2010. Trial scheduled to begin January 30, 2011, 17 months later.
On one hand it seems like an incredible waste of time. On the other, if that's what it takes to put him away forever so I don't need to worry about him walking the streets, then whatever.
