Coast Guard crews from Juneau and Sitka rescued a stranded pleasure craft in Icy Strait Wednesday evening, making it the second recreational vessel in three days to become disabled by bad weather.
The Coast Guard Sector Juneau command center received a radio call from two men aboard the 24-foot Tlingit Boy II around 8:20 p.m., according to a Coast Guard statement. The men said they needed assistance during 40-mph winds and 8-foot seas near Whitestone Harbor off Chichagof Island about 30 miles west of Juneau.
An Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, the good Samaritan Hoonah-based vessel Vagabond Queen and the Station Juneau 45-foot boat all responded to the scene (though that boat crew returned to Juneau after the boat was safely in tow by the Vagabond Queen). The vessels moored safely in Juneau around 1 a.m., the statement read.
