Operator believed dead after 25-ton crane tips in North Douglas

Posted: November 3, 2011 - 5:54pm

A crane operator is believed to have died Thursday afternoon in North Douglas after a 25-ton crane tipped over and trapped the operator inside, police say.

A police statement said Juneau Police Department officers, fire crews and the Coast Guard responded to the 3000 block of North Douglas Highway at 3:12 p.m. after receiving a report the operator was trapped. The operator could not be extracted due to “concerns regarding the stability of the scene.”

The operator was presumed to be dead.

Police say an investigation into the incident and recovery efforts are ongoing.
