JPD: Two people that fell into Kowee Creek were evading police

Posted: November 8, 2011 - 11:23am

The two people that fell about 80 feet into Kowee Creek on Sunday were evading police at the time, according to a release from the Juneau Police Department.

The fall killed Evan Smith, 22, and seriously injured an 18-year-old woman JPD has not identified.

Police arrived in the area at about 2:13 a.m. Sunday morning after receiving a report of a disturbance Smith and the woman were involved in, the release states. It does not describe the nature of the disturbance.

When police arrived, the woman and Smith jumped from a second-story window to avoid speaking to police, the release states. They then “ran into a steep, dark, wooded area above Kowee (C)reek” before falling about 80 feet.

Capital City Fire and Rescue took the woman to Bartlett Regional Hospital Sunday morning. No update on her condition is available at this time.
