The Douglas Community Tree lighting is Friday and there are some changes to the event this year.
Due to the removal of the Douglas Community United Methodist Church’s spruce tree, the event will be moved to the Pioneer Pavilion in Savikko Park on Savikko Road.
Odom Corp. has donated one of its lodge pole pines for use as a Christmas tree, and North Pacific Erectors will deliver it. The tree will be placed at the back of the pavilion and remain lit throughout December. Other groups may use the pavilion during the month around the tree.
The Christmas tree lighting will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at the pavilion with the City of Juneau Pipe Band piping carols. Keith Giles of Rozwick Giles Music will provide the sound. Rev. Cindy Roberts, Cub Scout Pack 10 and Tongass Council Girl Scouts will take part in the program. Mayor Bruce Botelho will light the tree, and the Douglas Methodist Men will host refreshments.
At 8 p.m. there will be an open skate with Santa at the Treadwell Arena. Santa and his merry elves from the Juneau Skate Club will host the skate. Children 12 and under skate free, and are encouraged to wear warm holiday clothes.
There will be a free tuba Christmas concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Douglas Community United Methodist Church, 1106 3rd St. There will be a reception after. For more information, visit the Douglas 4th of July Committee website at www.douglas4thofjuly.com.
