JCF hits goal for Glory Hole donations

Community contributions of more than $10,000 will be matched and given to downtown soup kitchen

Three days before deadline, the Juneau Community Foundation announced it has met its goal for the Glory Hole Donation Match challenge.

By Tuesday, the people of Juneau donated more than $10,000 to the local soup kitchen and shelter, which means JCF will match those funds and present the Glory Hole with a check to double that amount sometime this or next week.

“I’m just totally blown away,” Glory Hole Special Projects Manager Ray Cole said.

JCF is a local nonprofit that promotes philanthropy and promised last month to donate up to $10,000 to the Glory Hole if the community matched those funds by Thanksgiving. JCF Executive Director Amy Skilbred said on Tuesday they had received nearly $15,000 of donations.

“It’s been wonderful,” Skilbred said. “The people in Juneau are so generous and the organizations. It’s just really been a terrific project, and it’s great this time of the year that we’ll be able to give them a check in the next week or so.”

Skilbred said the matching challenge was a success not only because of donors in the community, but JCF donor advisors. Half of the $10,000 to match the funds came from JCF’s own granting funds and the other $5,000 is from the JCF donor-advised Blackwell Fund.

Skilbred also thanked the JCF Board of Directors for getting the project off the ground to provide the Glory Hole some financial relief.

The Glory Hole had reported last month that community donations had dropped off by 9.2 percent compared to last year, and that grant revenue decreased 23 percent after a Federal Emergency Management Agency/American Reinvestment and Recovery Act grant expired over the summer. That put the Glory Hole in a tight financial spot and stressed its already limited resources.

Cole said the money will be used in part to defray the costs of the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday food boxes given out each year to those in need.
