Planning Commission hears awnings, apartments, gravel

Red Dog Saloon gets variance for new awning on facade

The Red Dog Saloon asked the Planning Commission for an exception to a rule for canopy construction downtown. The bar, restaurant and retail store sought leeway to extend the canopy 18 inches further over the sidewalk and make it two feet taller than the current Juneau ordinance allows. The canopy is designed to fit with a new facade that features larger windows.

City staff found that the canopy is not in compliance. The Commission approved the variance.

At press time, the commission was to address a conditional use permit request, a variance request by the developers of a four-lot subdivision and a proposal by Goldbelt, Incorporated for gravel extraction and processing work near Berners Bay.

Nick Goddard and Kathleen Goddard requested a Conditional Use permit to “establish an accessory apartment within an existing home on a 10,018 square foot lot,” according to a Commission memorandum.

Square Knot Development asked for a “variance to minimum lot size for lots fronting on a minor arterial and to the requirement for a common access point for future proposal of a four lot subdivision,” according to the Commission agenda.

Square Knot said that a small home would need to be relocated “in order to comply with the minimum setback requirements” if the Square Knot’s four-lot subdivision is platted as proposed.

Goldbelt, Incorporated asked the Commission for approval to Extract, process, stockpile and export 110,000 yards of gravel from Cascade Point on Berners Bay. Goldbelt owns land at Cascade Point and currently uses the area as a dock to ferry Kensington Mine workers to and from the mine.

The Empire will update those issues in its next edition.
