The Nugget Mall’s new pet supply store plans to open Jan. 2.

“Petco will then hold a grand opening on the weekend of Jan. 6th through 8th.” said Bud Jaeger, Nugget Mall on-site property manager. A ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for the morning of Jan. 7, 2012.

Customers can adopt a pet, sign up for giveaways or model their pet for photos during grand opening weekend, said Petco spokeswoman Allie Maltese. Petco will have more information on its pet adoption later, she said.

Maltese said the new store is a standard sized Petco. Petco also has smaller Unleashed by PETCO boutique-style concept stores that specialize in natural, organic and higher-end products.

Shoppers wanting a warm transition from Petco to the rest of the mall will be disappointed, as there is no inside access from Petco to the mall, Maltese said.

Petco was founded in 1965 and is headquartered in California.

Office Max is also building a new location at Nugget Mall. The office supply retailer has not yet announced an opening date.
