State education board to meet today, Friday in Anchorage

The State Board of Education & Early Development will meet at 8 a.m. today, and 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Anchorage School District board room, 5530 E. Northern Lights Blvd.

The purpose of the meeting is to hold a work session and a business meeting. Topics at the work session include the application process for Mt. Edgecumbe High School in Sitka; the Library, Archives & Museums building project; and a required legislative report.

Four regulations will be proposed concerning new language arts and math standards, teacher certification, Alaska Performance Scholarship/WorkKeys scores, and pupil transportation. The board will consider adoption of regulations related to the Alaska Performance Scholarship/curriculum and Type ‘M’ professional certification. The board will hear a report regarding the Alaska School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Topics at the business meeting include opening a period of public comment on proposed regulations named above and adopting thereof. The board will be asked to approve appointments to the State Museum Collections Advisory Committee. The board also will hear reports regarding assessment, accountability and information management; legal issues; rural education; the budget; Mt. Edgecumbe High School; the Commissioner’s activities; and the Teaching & Learning Support Division. There will be an executive session pertaining to the selection of a student adviser-elect.

The board will take public comment on agenda and non-agenda items today. The public may offer comments and testimony beginning at 8:10 a.m. at the meeting site or at Legislative Information Offices in Anchorage, Barrow, Bethel, Fairbanks, Juneau, Kenai, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Kotzebue, Mat-Su, Nome, and Sitka.
