Three Juneau boys face criminal mischief and negligent burning charges after allegedly painting, then burning bleachers at Melvin Park nearly two weeks ago.
A woman called the Juneau Police Department on Dec. 4 and reported she saw three boys spray painting the bleachers at the park, located in the 4000 block of Riverside Drive, according to a Friday release from JPD. The boys would then light the paint on fire, the release states.
Capital City Fire and Rescue responded and saw three boys matching the descriptions provided by the woman. JPD officers then found the boys and questioned them.
The damage to the bleachers is estimated at $400, according to the release.
Charges of fourth-degree criminal mischief and criminally negligent burning against the boys — ages 12, 13 and 15 — were forwarded to Johnson Youth Center.

Where are the boys parents? will they be fined and held responsible for their unsupervised children?
Unsupervised children?
Did you not notice the ages of these kids? They are old enough to go outside without having mom or dad follow them everywhere. Parents can't encapsulate their kids in a bubble to keep them from being in or causing trouble. Kids have to grow up and learn the consequences of their actions.
The parents of course will be on the hook for the damage they did. You think the 12 year old has the money to pay for it himself?
If that were my boy...I see someone without privileges until the end of the school year and I'd be enjoying a couple months of not having so many chores because you can bet I'd be having him do them.
I'd also hand him one of those really large garbage bags and tell him to get out there and pick up the garbage in the park!! :)
A more fitting punishment
If you really want to get these punks attention, make them repair the damage they did and have Mom and Dad pay for it. I did this to my boys when they shop lifted and it works better than anything else I have ever found. We took all the little hoods to the store front area and made them peel gum off the side walk and then clean the windows and pick up butts. And we did it during the day during the tourist traffic right on Franklin. Some of these boy have grown into men and are productive people. They remember the lesson and agree that it had a major impact on their lives.
Admittedly, two of the four continued to live a sorted life but to date have are not criminal in nature.
