3 boys charged in connection to park vandalism

Three Juneau boys face criminal mischief and negligent burning charges after allegedly painting, then burning bleachers at Melvin Park nearly two weeks ago.

A woman called the Juneau Police Department on Dec. 4 and reported she saw three boys spray painting the bleachers at the park, located in the 4000 block of Riverside Drive, according to a Friday release from JPD. The boys would then light the paint on fire, the release states.

Capital City Fire and Rescue responded and saw three boys matching the descriptions provided by the woman. JPD officers then found the boys and questioned them.

The damage to the bleachers is estimated at $400, according to the release.

Charges of fourth-degree criminal mischief and criminally negligent burning against the boys — ages 12, 13 and 15 — were forwarded to Johnson Youth Center.
