SHI opens scholarship application period

Sealaska Heritage Institute is accepting applications for the 2012-2013 college and vocational school year.

Awards will be made to Sealaska shareholders and descendants enrolled in accredited colleges, universities and voc-tech schools. About 400 students receive the scholarships each year.

The deadline to apply is March 1. However, the institute is offering a $50 incentive to complete applications on or before Feb. 1 Early bird winners will have $50 included in their scholarship award.

Scholarships must be filled out and submitted online at www.sealaskaheritage.org.

Alaska Natives can apply who are defined as “Native” under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and enrolled to Sealaska Corp. Native lineal descendants of Alaska Natives enrolled to Sealaska Corp., whether or not the applicant owns Sealaska Corp. stock can also apply.

Sealaska Corporation provides its scholarship funds from an endowment and sharing provisions established under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.

The agreement among the regional corporations provides scholarships to students seeking degrees in disciplines that lead to employment in Sealaska or its subsidiaries.

This Day in Juneau History: Jan. 19, 1987

On Jan. 19, 1987, with revenues half of what they were the year before and an estimated budget deficit ranging from $700-$900 million, the 15th Alaska Legislature began working on the state’s enormous budget deficit. Everyone was present for the Legislature’s first day except for Sen. Frank Ferguson, D-Kotzebue, who resigned shortly after his election because of health problems. Taking his place was Kotzebue businessman and Native leader Willie Hensley, whom Gov. Steve Cowper appointed for the position until the 1988 elections.
