A cab driver was the victim of a late-night theft and assault Friday morning, police say. Juneau Police Department said in a release that a cab driver picked up a man downtown and drove him to the valley. When the cab arrived at the Jordan Creek Shopping Center parking lot, the assailant stole an undisclosed amount of money from the cab driver, and hit him in the face, according to the release. The bandit then ran away. Police did not release the name of the cab driver or the company he worked for, only identifying him as a 46-year-old man. Police say they received the report of the attack at 1:45 a.m. Friday, and that medics responded to the call and took the victim to Bartlett Regional Hospital for minor injuries. An investigation is ongoing.

I'm sorry to hear that this has happened to one of our cab drivers. Praying you get well!
Cabs should be affixed with Lexan clear dividers between front &
...back seats, as well as auto-"child locks". With this in place, the cabbie could have locked the guy in, gotten out of the cab, called the cops, and waited for them to come and take the crook away.
Really?
How does this criminal genius expect to get away with this in a small town? It's only a matter of time before he's warming a cot at the LCCF...I'm sure every cab driver in town has his eye out for him.
oh crime in Juneau.......

It is a requirement by JPD that all passengers must be able to exit the vehicle on their own if needed, therefore child locks would not be permitted. There are times when it is better to have the passenger sit next to the driver than behind the driver. All I can say is that I am thankful that I or my husband no longer drive taxi, it's becoming too dangerous here to do so.
It will be a sad day when cabbies have to isolate from passenger
Wolfmagic2012 comments that we should make like major metro cabbies and lock ourselves away from our passengers. He might notice that in cities where that happens the drivers are usually not friends and neighbors. I would hate to reach the point where I thought I had to be locked away from my passengers. I enjoy conversing with them. Juneau is much too small a town for us to have to do this and I certainly don't want to be a cab driver in a town where this is necessary. (By the way I have also driven in Eugene, Oregon which is four times the size of Juneau and not isolated as we are and they don't use the suggested safety devices.)
