Police announced Friday three teenage boys, ages 12, 12 and 15, were caught spray-painting graffiti on the concession stand at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park and urinating on the building.
Juneau Police Department said in a release they received a report of vandalism to the concession stand last on Jan. 17. Police found profanity spray-painted on the walls and urine on the building, as well as additional profanity spray-painted on the back of Floyd Dryden Middle School. Property damage was estimated at $500, the release said.
Police reviewed security camera footage at the park and found the vandalism occurred at about 7 p.m. on Jan. 13. An investigation found the culprits were two 12-year-old boys and that a 15-year-old had urinated on the building, the release said.
“By using the footage, officers were able to determine the names of the teenagers involved and spoke with all parties,” the release states.
Police said the case is being handled through civil means at the request of the City and Borough of Juneau Parks & Recreation staff.

Add commentI'd love to see them dealt
I'd love to see them dealt with in Singapore-fashion. By that I mean that a martial arts expert strikes them on the bare hind end with a rattan cane. The number of blows is determined by a judge. I think such a punishment would send a message to the other aspiring little punks in the community.
I realize that my wishes are unrealistic in our progressive culture. However, unless this post is censured, I can express my feelings here.
Have a great Sunday everybody.
Vandals
I agree with J E Fume.

Vandals
Heh... I agree also. Too bad it will never happen here.
Vandalism
Strike my child with a cane? For vandalism? You need to get through me first.
As you wish ken - bend over!
Perhaps if we spanked the parents, the kids would somehow fall in line. It's gotta be a step in the right direction.
Spoorprint
Who is "we"? Can you actually envision yourself swinging the cane against a 12 year old or would it be easier as a spectator sport? I believe violence begets violence, and a willingness to beat a 12 year does not make one a great candidate for parenthood.
Too Bad No Names.
I can see the names of minors being omitted if the case were D/V or S/A but when children act out like this I think the community deserves to know.
Would be interesting to see a bill directed at both children and their parents. Child does the crime, parent(s) and child both do the time. Makes me wonder how many kiddies like these would straighten RIGHT UP if their parents became accountable/punishable too...
Ken,It's easy to talk tough
Ken,
It's easy to talk tough since you know you'll never be faced with such a situation. However, if and when your children do get into trouble, I'll be looking forward to observing the manner in which you stand up to the judicial system on your children's behalf. That ought to be a great spectator sport.
The basic problem with youth crime in our country is that kids feel free to do whatever they please since there are no sanction that they fear. You are welcome to your airy-fairy view of the world. However, I believe that Pavlov was on to something.
By the way, I'm sure there
By the way, I'm sure there are a lot of people in the community who would step up to the plate to discipline these little punks.
It would be better as a spectator sport...
Really ken, I don't need to get personally involved. Unless I am the victim of course. I did get ripped off hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of dollars from a stinking vandal last year. I have been exposed to more dishonesty in Juneau than all the other places I have lived put together. There is a huge lack of discipline in Juneau, both with adults and children. A mild public flogging would have to be a step in the right direction. And if you want to prevent your child from proper discipline, perhaps it is because you don't feel discipline is important, either for you or your vandal.
Uh...you all miss the point
Its not what you do about it after it happens...its what you do that keeps it from happening. Boored kids do destructive things. Activities and healthy family accountability is better than any cane.....
I knew where my children were and kept them active and structured. They had no time for Friday Night antics.
And...I think its a great idea to have the kids and parents responsible for 'restitution by sweating.' Heck yea...family time repainting the snack shack!
I am speaking of...
I am speaking of physical abuse to children in general...my kids are grown up with children of their own...and I believe having 100 lbs + advantage over your victim is false bravado. I have witnessed police brutality overseas, against restrained prisoners, and believe me, it is not something one would want subjected to children, much less fellow Americans.
Mama T, I agree with you
Mama T,
I agree with you whole-heartedly. I knew my post would get somebody's panties in a wad. However, I wanted to get a discussion going here. If the parents get hit in the pocketbook over this or have to spend a few weekends painting some buildings, they will probably be more inclined to monitor their children's activities a little better. I understand that a perfect resolution is not always possible. However, having a judiciary and parents that just stand around with their fingers in their noses is not in the children's or the community's best interests.
Take A Breath...
No need to beat kids there are far more productive ways to make their lives miserable and lasts longer.
As a mom of teens... I think making the kids/parents paint & clean not just what they vandalized but other areas as well, at their expense, would be far more productive than a beating. The butt pain will go away but monopolizing their social life and money for a few months will hurt a lot more !!!
"urinating on the building,
"urinating on the building, urine on the building, urinated on the building" - okay, we get it already.
What I see is the local paper reporting on most every little incident that the local police and fire departments and judical systems are involved in, and in great detail.
Ever heard of TMI - too much information? It begins to border on creepy at times.
In a small community, what good does it serve except to pit citizen against citizen and feed the rumor mill?
Case in point - the story earlier about the daycare provider. The details in that article were ridiculous and she hasn't even been charged with anything.
We all know there's plenty of real news out there that's much more interesting and much more productive than turning the Empire into the National Enquiror.
Calypso, You're off to a late
Calypso,
You're off to a late start today. Can't we have our fun? You throw in your two-bits worth on pretty much everything. I got a good little conversation started.
By the way, have any of you folks out there ever been to Singapore? I have. It's a nice place. I recommend that people check it out. I had a great time when I was there.
Caning...
...is getting the beating that your daddy should have given you to preclude such foolish and undisciplined behavior. Not a bad idea. A little spanking in time saves floggings nine. (Just made that up :) )
How about;
Publishing the name of the kid and the names of the parents?
Little John Rotten son of Bill and Jan Rotten was arrested for (name a crime)
vandals
reamus - take a prozac

Thanks for noticing our detailed local news coverage. We find that most people who live in Juneau want to know what is going on here, and we include all the details that we can get. In fact, the police and fire report is usually one of the most visited pages online.
If you need a break from Juneau news, I was just on the Denver Post website reading up on things in Colorado. Looks like a lively place. (I like to visit a different state capital or large city newspaper site every Sunday to keep up with news in the rest of the country.)
Our local section online also has a link to the local police and fire scanner traffic for those who want to hear their breaking news firsthand.

Spend a night in jail
I've always been a proponent of kids spending one night in jail for any crimes. This applies to kids 13-17, to let them get a taste of where they are headed.
Just one night. Won't kill them, but maybe being away from their X-box for 24 hours might.
I also think kids should be given a cell phone with GPS and if they go out, their parents should track their movements on GoogleEarth.
My parents' solution for keeping kids out of trouble: Work them. I got my first job washing dishes at 13. At 16 I worked in fast food. I was always employed throughout my teens. I stayed out of trouble.
High five Jo!
Agree wholeheartedly! Best solution yet presented! My youth work ethics mimic yours. Now just to get OCS on board...
JDPD has an excellent reputation for doing the right thing.
I have the absolute highest respect for how JDPD handles kids or adults. They have shown excellent judgement on when to carry a stick and when to let parents carry the stick so to speak.
I guess a lot has to do with attitude of the perp once they have been "nailed" by the JDPD. And also the previous history.
I know the particulars on at least 2 different unrelated cases in which JDPD judgement saved and turned around the lives of all those involved. I am sorry but you will not always read about it in the Empire, but it certainly does happen. So cut them some slack and respect what they do.
Thanks for listening.
These Kids
have a bright future ahead of them.

@oneofwe
she must be homeschooled to be reading by age seven!
My daughters were reading by 7. Valley Christian Academy and
Auke Bay Elementary.
My mother taught me to read
My mother taught me to read by age 4, and I taught my son to read by age 4..... I would be surprised if a child couldn't read by age 7! My granddaughter has been reading for a year and a half, and she just turned 7. She's not home-schooled. She's Charter Schooled.
