Juneau breaks single-day snow record

JUNEAU — Juneau has broken a single-day record for snowfall.

The National Weather Service says 6.3 inches fell at the airport Sunday. The previous record for that day was 6 inches in 1954.

Snow has consistently fallen in the capital city since January 20. Between then and Sunday, a total of 35.2 inches of snow has fallen in Juneau.

Weather service meteorologist Tim Steffen said Monday morning that 45.1 inches had fallen so far this month, and 2 to 4 more inches were possible before the weather pattern turns rainy.

Average snowfall for January is 25.8 inches, but Steffen says this month won't even end in the top five snowiest Januarys in Juneau. He says the record is 75 inches in 2009.
