Crime of the week: storage unit burglaries

Posted: February 26, 2012 - 1:14am

The Juneau Police Department Crime of the Week for Feb. 24 is in reference to storage unit vandalism/burglary.

Sgt. Paul Hatch said in a release that JPD received a report of several storage units being broken into on Shaune Drive and in the 5700 block of Glacier Highway in the Lemon Creek area on Jan. 4, 11 and 17. Some of the units were interior units, and once inside, the suspect damaged several of them by forcing or prying the doors open.

Some of the items that were stolen from the units include two pairs of Black Diamond Telemark skis, size 29 red Garmont Voodoo ski boots, size 13 Simms Pro Wader wading boots, Epson flatbed scanner, a pair of Russian Cossack women’s equestrian boots and decorative paper umbrellas from Thailand.

Anyone with information regarding this or any other crime is encouraged to log onto the Juneau Crime Line at juneaucrimeline.com and report their tip.

Tipsters are guaranteed anonymity and can be rewarded.

Crime Line is a nonprofit organization composed of a cross-section of the community and is designed to aid police investigations.

Rent at your own risk

This happened to me a few years ago, and I fault the facility operator. The units have openings at the tops, and your "neighbors" can easily climb into your unit and look around unimpeded. Break your door and the outside door, and make it look like an outside job. My "neighbors" vacated about the same time as I was robbed- what a coincidence. And while I was moving out, post-robbery, I noted two men using a nearby unit as living quarters. They had access 24 hours a day, behind locked doors, could hear if anyone else was coming in, and could keep quiet until they left. I wrote to the owners, and apparently they did not deem it appropriate to make any security changes. I reported it and my suspicions also in a police report, and never heard back from them. Probably viewed as a low priority petty theft, but I lost lots of nice things that I had collected my whole career, after paying the facility thousands of dollars to protect them. Never again.

There are a lot more storage

There are a lot more storage facilities in Juneau than most would imagine. I have lots of crap but I have been able to purge before I go for the storage unit....It would be informative to hear from other offsite storage users as to the security they perceive....
