The Juneau School District Central Office was evacuated Wednesday after it received a suspicious letter.
Kristin Bartlett, communications manager, said the envelope did contain a white powder and was addressed to the district.
“We received a suspicious letter this morning,” she said. “The HAZMAT team is here as a precautionary matter at this point. I have heard reports that this has occurred in other locations in Alaska and across the nation.”
Bartlett said she’s been told that the FBI has found two other incidents in Alaska recently with these letters. Both were sent to school districts, contained a white powder, and were sent from Texas. Bartlett said she believes the letter was also from Texas.
Several states, including Massachusetts and Texas, have been reporting these letters at school districts.
“The HAZMAT team is in the room cleaning it up and taking samples,” she said. “They will send it to the crime lab in Anchorage to be tested. The area will be closed off until that time.” She said it will take a couple of days to get the results back.
