Goldbelt accepting intern applications

Posted: March 8, 2012 - 1:14am  |  Updated: March 15, 2012 - 12:11am

Goldbelt, Inc.’s Career Development Program is now accepting applications for summer interns. The internships provide shareholders and descendants an opportunity to gain hands-on professional experience in a variety of fields.

Currently there are 17 internships available in Juneau and at Goldbelt’s East Coast subsidiaries. Some of the disciplines include accounting, administrative support, business development, corporate communications, human resources, marketing, hospitality management, retail merchandising, and records management.

“We are proud to offer a unique internship program that provides participants an opportunity to not only gain hands-on experience in a professional setting, but also gain valuable knowledge from weekly career development workshops that will assist them as they complete their education and move into the workforce," said spokeswoman Lisa-Marie Ikonomov.

All Career Development internships are paid an hourly wage and last for 12 weeks. Lower 48 internships include housing assistance and a travel stipend. Students continuing their education are also eligible for an additional scholarship of up to $500 at the completion of their internship.

In order to be eligible for the program, applicants must be a Goldbelt shareholder or descendant and currently enrolled in or have completed within the past six months a college, university or vocational program. For an application or to view a complete list of available internships, interested candidates should visit the Goldbelt website at bit.ly/xwBcvd. The priority deadline for applications is March 30.

Headquartered in Juneau, Goldbelt, Inc. has more than 3,400 shareholders and was established under the Alaska Native Claims settlement Act.

Does this particular position

Does this particular position requires "racial preference" like other positions? Or is it a true Equal Opportunity position?

Say what you want but:

As stated in the article, "The internships provide shareholders and descendants an opportunity to gain hands-on professional experience in a variety of fields." It's a wonderful opportunity for the Goldbelt shareholder community to help its own young people get the experience needed to compete in the world.

Still..... I don't get it

@pjcad48

It's tough for me to understand why any racial divisions are healthy. We are taught to practice equality in all things....it's the law for most of us. Why should GOLDBELT and SEARHC be exempt? Specify race in an employment ad and you are sued, fined, shut down, shunned. I don't get it...explain it to me.

I am excited for the youth that will participate and by no means intend to offend. Just curious.

I don't see what's so wrong

I don't see what's so wrong with a Native corporation wanting to hire other native people or give opportunities for their young people to gain professional experience. An African American organization would lean towards hiring others African Americans. A gay organization would lean towards hiring those who are gay. A religious organization...say a Jewish League...would hire those who are Jewish. Why is it offensive when a native corporation wants to hire and provide opportunity to their own native people? That's not against the law, in fact there are laws that specify they can do that. These corporations were, after all, created to manage their own land and businesses.

Goldbelt internships

I saw it coming...any article of this nature brings out the racist. Does it matter that generations of minorities have been discriminated against and now have the ways and means to help one another and it is looked at in a negative manner. OH PLEASE GIVE ME A BREAK. I'm not a bleeding heart but now that everyone is pretty much on even ground it a little difficult to accept that the oppressed are now in a position of fight back.Sounds lame I know..but it is what it is. So lets move on....everyone needs an opportunity to better themselves. The mining industry in S.E. Alaska should follow suit and start an apprenticeship program. This type of program has worked well w/other Alaska Native interests in Alaska.

Exactly ... Goldbelt is not

Exactly ... Goldbelt is not an Equal Opportunity Employer, that is plain as day. I suppose, legally, they are exempt from that law. Even though we are taught (even at the state level) that employers are suppose to comply ... Doesn't matter if it's a minority or majority, treat every person equally ... ah well.

White Male Rage

Sync and kpawsuh...it's pretty sad that you have a problem with a minority owned business providing opportunities to other minorities. By the way, Goldbelt's new CEO is a white male, their CFO is a white male...so how is it "plain as day" that they are not an Equal Opportunity Employer? You should educate yourself on what "native preference" actually means before you start spewing your uneducated hate. I find it so counterproductive how people can turn something positive like providing career development opportunities for young people into something negative. Are you mad because you are not eligible to apply for a internship at a minority owend business? Google "internships" and you will find thousands that aren't at minority owned businesses.

@ Juneau-Grown

You are funny.

As a non-alaskan-native, try applying for a position in that company. I was specifically told that since I am not Alaskan Native (apparently American Native doesn't count), I cannot work for the company. .. Yes, "Plain as day". Try applying before sprouting off such nonsense.

"native preference" "white preference" "black preference" "asian preference" mean the exact same thing. The exact same end result. The intent means nothing. It is another word for racism.

I'll give you points for failing at trolling. .. Good luck in your future endeavors.

P.S.: I am all for Equal Opportunity Employers. Employers who choose not to participate, sets a bad example for this city, and country as a whole.

There was a recent case that help proves the above. The "intent" was to give natives preferences in jobs to help stimulate them into the economy. I agree that is a worthy goal. The law in reference specifically that this is not based on race, etc. And I again, agree.

Unfortunately, the result of the law that was/is intended for good deeds, ended up the same as any other .. .. ..

I doubt you ever even applied

I doubt you ever even applied at Goldbelt or any other native corporation. Sounds pretty clear that you are lying to try and prove your point because what you are saying doesn't even make sense. If you just take a look at their employees, you will see that they have quite a few who are non-natives. Perhaps you just weren't qualified for the job or they didn't want to hire you. No need to be bitter towards an entire population of native people because they didn't want to hire you. If you have questions about what Native Preference actually means, you should probably brush up on PL 93-638. And, by the way, as a fellow Caucasian, I don't need your luck. I'm not a bitter white man. I hope those kids who apply for these internships do well and end up moving on and doing great things for their community. I believe that they deserve it and have the right to have their own people leading them as their employees and managers!

By all means, don't let facts persuade you. I am not here to win you over with facts. I only ask that you quit lying as that raises false hope in the community. But hey, whatever rocks your boat.

As others on this site can attest, you have added yourself to the list of site trolls.

This does bring up something else. I applied in 1994. It is well known for a fact of the racism back than. Have the company finally matured past that in the last 20ish years? Not for the intern positions according to this article, but perhaps other positions, if Juneau-Grown is telling the true on that part.

I have no bitterness and wish

I have no bitterness and wish the kids well. I just know those same kids would sue the pants off me if I said white male preference. It should be the most qualified person, regardless of race, color, gender, whatever. Im tired of it only being racist if I do it, but for everyone else its promoting under utilized workforce or righting past wrongs. How long are you gonna work that angle?

Damn .... kpawsuth ... you

Damn .... kpawsuth ... you and I see eye to eye on this.

I agree, it is a difficult problem. I mean, first, it's education to deal with. I would LOVE to see, every single person receive the same base education before 20 years old.

That way, every single person starts out on equal footing fresh out of school. That would put every person on equal footing for entry level jobs.

From there, then what? Advance education? College? In this day and age, even with grants and scholarships, most of the time, it is an arm and a leg just to pay the left overs.

Lets face it. This country is one, huge, fat mess. Patchwork laws only make the problem worse..

@ Sync

"I only ask that you quit lying as that raises false hope in the community." Not sure what you think lying about, and it doesn't matter. I'm sorry for you that you think someone else having an opinion that doesn't match yours is "lying".

As for you considering me a "troll"...well...whatever. This is only the second time I've ever commented on a story in the Empire. I do read the comments though every now and then. I recognize your screen name as you seem to comment on almost everything, all day long. You must not work. No wonder you're upset about other people having opportunities for jobs and are still bitter about something that happened 18 years ago.

I know you like to have the last word, so by all means have it. I don't care. I have a job and a family that need my attention so spending my day staring at the Empire so I can comment on things and rip other people apart isn't my passion. I have a life.

As for those interns at Goldbelt, I grew up in Juneau and have lots of friends and acquaintances who are Native. Good for them that they have opportunity. I hope they take advantage and have a great experience working for THEIR company.

Finally, I wish this was a world where we didn't need laws to counter the racism in this world. But that's not the world we live in. There are some people who don't want to lose their power and would prefer to keep others down. I'm not one of those people and I wish all the natives whether it be at SEARHC, Goldbelt or Sealaska well in their endeavors. I'm rooting for them to be successful and hopefully they will someday be the CEO's and CFO's for the company that they own.

Sync...the last word is yours. Feel free to call me whatever name you want or try and tell me how I'm wrong and you're right and that's the rest of us are stupid. Cause I need to get back to my life now.

ANCSA

Those of you who think Goldbelt Corp is being racial should educate yourself about this corporation, it's an ANCSA corporation.
Here are a few links and articles about how and or why they have to operate the way they do:

http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/43/1604

http://juneauempire.com/opinion/2011-11-24/my-turn-change-necessity-seal...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_Native_Regional_Corporations

And kpawsuh, I thought you are part native since you said so in this post:
http://juneauempire.com/state/2012-02-06/opposition-selling-otter-pelts-...
So you should have no problem as an applicant for positions which you might qualify for.
