The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development will host an open house in Juneau to discuss with the community the state’s proposed new standards in English language arts and mathematics for grades kindergarten through 12.
The department encourages parents, students, employers and the general public, as well as educators, to attend and share their thoughts.
The open house will be held between 5 and 7 p.m. on March 30 in the first-floor boardroom in the Goldbelt Building at 801 West 10th Street. Refreshments will be served.
The complete standards and summaries will be available at the meeting. The standards also are available at www.eed.state.ak.us/standfaqs.html.
The State Board of Education is seeking public comment on the proposed standards through May 12. The board is expected to consider adopting the standards at its June 7-8 meeting in Anchorage.
“The proposed new standards will set a trajectory of high expectations, providing our students the ability to meet their challenges head on and pursue lives and careers inside and out of Alaska,” said Education Commissioner Mike Hanley. “Our goal was to develop Alaska standards that match or exceed the rigor of standards that are being adopted by states nationwide.”
