Former Assembly Member Merrill Sanford is seen in this undated file photo. On Wednesday, Sanford announced his intention to run for City and Borough of Juneau mayor.

Former Juneau Assembly Member Merrill Sanford — who termed out this past fall — is more than ready to jump back into field and has announced he will run for mayor this fall.

Mayor Bruce Botelho will be terming out this year (a person can serve for three consecutive terms and then must have a one-year break before serving again). Sanford served on the Assembly for nine years and as a volunteer firefighter in the community for more than 30 years.

“I have been working with Southeast Conference on some of their projects and got a little bit frustrated with some of the things we’re trying to do there with jobs and basic infrastructure throughout all of Southeast. I thought maybe it’s time to jump back into this thing and move forward with some of this stuff.”

Sanford said there are two or three projects just within Juneau that at least need to be looked at.

Two of those projects include the AJ Mine and a mine at the Herbert River.

“We’ve slowly got some information on the water system,” Sanford said. “The AJ Mine itself will produce not only property tax dollars by a million and a half or so, but it will also produce royalties. I think that it deserves a really good looking at. ... With the AJ, they just finished up on their water study. It gives us a way to protect our watershed. There are some ideas of how we could do that. I would be willing to look at those things very seriously. We should get us a second source of water and we need to get our water sources up to speed anyway.”

Sanford said there are opportunities like the AJ Mine and location near the Herbert River throughout Southeast. He said there are two out by Skagway that are close to having a mine plan and a couple near Prince of Wales.

“I think we just need people from all over our region need to stand up and support somehow in any way possible,” he said.

Sanford said he also will bring back to the Assembly his normal stance of not supporting tax increases or mill rate increases to balance the budget.

Sanford said that if people are pro-development or for keeping and growing populations in Southeast Alaska, they should support him.

Sanford can’t file with the city until the filing period opens in August, but he has let the clerk’s office know his intentions. He also hasn’t filed a letter of intent with the Alaska Public Offices Commission yet, but indicated he must do so when he starts collecting money.

YES.

He will have my support! Finally, someone with some common sense to take the lead. Someone who doesn't feel everything needs to be $tudied until it's no longer feasible. Just get the job done!

Merrill as mayor will be a breath of fresh air for Juneau. We need to move forward in Juneau and this region, not side to side, or backward. This region is relatively stale with a few economic engines running, but not as many as their should be.

One trick pony

Typical of career politician, The water study is still in draft form, not finished, nor is the public comment period over-but who needs to listen to citizens anyway? Aren't they all on the Chamber? Yea, we need more "people to stand up and support somehow" No thinking required.

Apparently, kitty,

you don't understand the election process. You don't get to vote yes or no. You get to vote FOR a candidate. If you don't think Mr Sanford will make a good mayor, then get off your filtered word (there, Empire, I did it for you) and run against him. Or find someone YOU think will make a better mayor and persuade that person to run.

Name calling is immature and unnecessary. You too, barnard.

Personally, I think Merrill did a wonderful job as an Assembly member and Deputy Mayor, and I hope he is successful in his bid to become Mayor. I agree with all the other posts.

pro Juneau

The key to Mr. Sanford's success in this election will be turnout. If the areas away from Downtown don't get out and vote, Mr. Sanford will likely lose to any mediocre candidate. The liberal elite in downtown Juneau and Douglas always turn out in high percentages. The more conservative voters in the Valley and other parts of town have historically turned out in lower percentages. Many controversial, pro-development issues have been voted down because of this problem. For example, the vote on supporting the road would have almost certainly been affirmative if just a couple more percent had turned out in the valley.

The fact of the matter is that Juneau needs development. If we don't extract resources, there is no new money. Juneau has resources that can be responsibly extracted. This resource development will generate jobs and revenue for Juneau and the rest of Southeast AK. If we don't make wise decisions now, we will continue a path of decline and Southeast will be a shadow of itself.

Hoonahfish ?

Juneau can only grow so big and we are at a healthy sustainable population now.

Tell me, how is dumping toxic waste tailings in a water body responsible development?

The fact is the mining industry has no creditable plan for disposing of the toxic waste from mining, it ends up polluting our environment.

I do not like what is happening to Juneau. Almost everywhere you go now there are lots of people, lots of noise crackers going off, we are being buried in waste and noise pollution. It’s like there is no respect for the environment or people anymore and Merrill Sanford is a big reason why our town has changed for the worse. I certainly will not vote for him.

Also when did it become ok to use "tax-payer" dollars to build a road to private mining claims? This is whats really behind "Build the Road".

The AJ and tourism? Heck, the AJ and living a normal life!

I'm not completely savvy when it comes to modern mining, so please tell me if this is an off-base concern...

There are enough stories about the noise from the Treadwell to indicate that it was a part of the Douglas residents' day-to-day life. I've lived in Juneau most of my life, but certainly not long enough to know what it was like when the Treadwell or the AJ were operational.

If we stick a mine - literally - right above downtown, will we have that constant, inescapable, seven day a week noise pollution? What will that do to our tourism industry? Property values in downtown and Douglas? Desirability as a state capital and a place to do business?

A lot of people enjoy Juneau because they don't have the omnipresent light pollution, air pollution, water pollution, and noise pollution that are part and parcel with so many places "Outside." How much of that changes if there is a modern mining operation just uphill of our downtown area?

Yikes. At the Forest Service

Yikes. At the Forest Service round table meetings Mr. Sanford was pushing logging and roads for mines in our Tongass National Forest and for State land (which is also public land) to be logged.

Wow. For once I agree w/ a comment by SilentMajority:

Merrill is "someone who doesn't feel everything needs to be $tudied"

No sneakiness here

We don't need a mayor who represents the Chamber, the cruise lines, the mining and logging companies; we need a mayor who represents the PEOPLE of Juneau. We've had one in Bruce Bothelho, who has done an excellent job.

About the only thing Merrill has going for him is his candor. As much as I disagree with Merrill about almost everything, at least I know where he stands: in favor of digging up, cutting down, and paving over almost everything that makes Juneau a worthwhile place.

His simplistic views about development should make any thoughtful citizen of Juneau that cares about the place we live start talking to potential opponents, and hope that we can find ONE person to run against him who will make a much better mayor.

Time for a turn around!

It's about time someone is ready to change things around here. If you honestly believe Juneau will survive without any pro development you are missing somthing. Give me an example of a town that is sitting quietly and not growing. Now look and see how many occupations are in that town. Think of all the empty houses, commercial buildings, and people that will move out of town. I'm not saying cut every tree within a 50 mile radius, I'm saying build jobs and keep families growing in Juneau! Let's do this Merrill.

Merrill's the man!!!

With Merrill, what you see is what you get, he doesn't sugar coat and play the political gamesmanship like Botelho has done for so many, many years.

I appreciate Merrill's dedication and service to the community, he has the well being of Juneau at the top of his priorities and it is high time for a leader to be bold about our future and not hide behind committees, studies, and fiascos like the Tongass Futures Roundtable, climate control agenda, spaceship capital buildings, bronze whales and every other boondoggle Bruce has manipulated his way through with OUR money.

Can't wait to donate to Merrill's campaign!!

I can give you an example of an entire country; Taiwan. They have 0 natural resources, even have to import gravel to build roads, yet they have one of the most productive economies on the planet. why? Because they invest in their people. Education, innovation, foresight and the (gumption) to dream.

Ever since Holland stopped relying on the extraction of natural resources, the overall intelligence of the country increased. It is called the "Dutch Effect"

I'm sorry

As a resident of Juneau for forty years, I apologize because I haven't followed all the assembly meetings and recorded how individuals voted, so I cannot honest comment on Merrill Sanford's candidacy as mayor.
But I will comment on one thing. It has been, and will be a disaster, if we as a community, a State or a nation, vote for and elect anyone simply because they have a quick, simplistic answer to solving each and every problem that comes along. Many issues on the local, state and national level are very complex, with manifold consequences.
If we, as voters simply cast our vote because someone is handsome or pretty, they are just old friends, they have some quick and easy answers or I see their picture a lot and they must be great.... then we are doomed to failure.
I am not a supporter of Merrill Sanford, nor an opponent, I don't know if I will vote for him or not. I do know one thing. That is before voting for or against him, I will do my best to find out if he appears to be the best candidate or not - to me, that is my voter responsibility.

Sounds like a "smart guy" like you would be right at home in Holland... How about we pass the hat and get you a ticket?

BTW: those “Smart people” in Holland are paying income tax at %60 and then Value added tax at %19 for a total tax rate of %71.

The last thing we need in

The last thing we need in Juneau is more divisiveness and it looks pretty clear to me thats what we will get with Merrill Sanford as Mayor. And I certainly do not like the idea of trying to increase the population here, I think we're pretty maxed out now.

Hes also been at CBJ for 8 years. Its time to change course - not go back in time.

Yes, AH HA. Holland is a horrible place, filled with resentment, because people pay more taxes to help other people who maybe have worse luck or maybe are just lazy but it's not my place to judge so I should just calm down because their society as a whole is more functional and more human oriented and less money oriented than our own and maybe, just maybe, that's a little more important than being able to buy the newest Macbook or a big truck because there are cracks in our society, cracks that an increasing number of people are falling through.

But what do I know? I bet if they just refused to pay taxes and said, "I got mine, [filtered word] Y'ALL AND THE SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS THAT ALLOWED ME TO MAKE IT THUS FAR" it'd be a far better place to live.

@AH HA: no, I believe we live

@AH HA: no, I believe we live in a society. In a society, people who benefit disproportionately from that society have a moral duty to help those who have not benefited as much from that society. In addition to being the MORAL thing to do, this is good for society as a whole. After all, who said that "a chain is only as good as its weakest link"? Not that mean lady from that game show, that's for sure.

So if it's good for society as a whole, and it is also a moral imperative, the only question remains: why is greed an acceptable excuse for not doing your part?

What do you really believe? Do you really believe all of your success is all thanks to YOU and YOU alone, and that you don't owe ANYONE ANYTHING because you're just so awesome?

And just an FYI, I have no illusions about my own privilege. White, male, born into a middle-class family, always had a safe, stable environment in which to grow and flourish--bam! I've got it made! And I don't pretend that my success is all thanks to me. All I did was take the opportunities that were handed to me.
