JSD will host interviews for candidates

Posted: March 24, 2012 - 11:07pm

Candidates for two school official jobs have been announced by Juneau School District and interviews will be open to the public over the next two weeks.

Interviews will be for the principal of Gastineau Elementary School and vice principal of Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School.

Gastineau began searching for a new principal last year when then-Principal Angie Lunda accepted a new job as superintendent of Hoonah School District. After interviewing several candidates for the slot, JSD did not find a "good fit" so it hired retired Harborview Elementary School Principal Kathleen Yanamura as an interim.

"We were thinking if we started the process earlier in the year we might be able to find the right person," said JSD spokeswoman Kristin Bartlett.

The interviews and open houses for the new candidates will be April 4 and 5. The open house is from 4-5:30 p.m. on April 4 at Gastineau.

Interviews will begin at 9 a.m. April 5. Candidates are Brenda Edwards of Juneau, and Jacquelyn Howland of Placentia, Calif.

Dzantik'i Heeni Assistant Principal Gary Campbell is interested in going back to teaching. He filled in the role when Principal Molly Yerkes stepped up as interim principal, and was named as principal the following year.

"He sort of took on this role, being straightforward about the fact he wanted to continue being a teacher," Bartlett said. "... When she got hired as the permanent principal, he agreed to continue on. Now he would like to continue teaching. The process isn’t quite as extensive as when we do a principal hire, but we will go ahead and do public interviews."

Four candidates were selected for the assistant principal position: Kristy Germain of Juneau; Sondra Lundvick of Metlakatla; Eric Serbus of Prior Lake, Minn.; and Tim Fraychineaud of Juneau.

Interviews will begin at 10 a.m. March 28 in the DZ library.

Bartlett said all of the Juneau candidates are currently teachers and either have their administrative certificates or are close to obtaining them.
