Trial for suspected shooter to begin Monday

Posted: April 1, 2012 - 11:03pm

A jury trial for the Juneau man accused of shooting his friend in the face in December of last year is scheduled to begin Monday.

The trial for Kenneth E. Nalan, now 36, is slated to last all week in Juneau Superior Court with Judge Louis Menendez presiding, beginning with jury selection early Monday morning.

Prosecutors allege Nalan shot his friend John N. Duran, 33, with a .357-caliber gun during a small get-together at Nalan’s house in the Mendenhall Valley the night of Dec. 20, 2011.

Duran survived the incident, but had to undergo facial reconstruction surgery, the Empire previously reported.

Nalan is represented by the public defender agency, whose attorneys previously said in court that a case could be made the shooting was in self-defense.

If convicted, Nalan could face up to 20 years in prison for first-degree assault, a felony.
