Harborview teacher to be Gastineau principal

The Juneau School District has selected Harborview Elementary School teacher Brenda Edwards to lead Gastineau Elementary School next year.

Edwards and Jacquelyn Howland of Placentia, Calif., interviewed for the position last week.

Edwards currently teaches second and third grade in the Tlingit Culture Language and Literacy Program.

As part of a Building for Excellence Grant, she worked at Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School as a kindergarten through fifth grade art teacher with the TCLL program as well as in curriculum development at Harborview. She taught summer school and has worked as a TCLL program liaison and a transitions teacher at DZ. She is a member of the JSD Equity Committee, Family Literacy Alliance, Alaska Native Heritage Center, Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp No. 12, and is co-facilitator of the Harborview Site Council.
