We know Ted was wrong and on the take. The proscution committed an unethical act but that does not change the facts. Ted asked for the bill to cover his rear as a formality...he was a US senator for goodness sake...he was not a stupid man, he knew what he was getting from VECO and why. Rally on the steps all you want...he was guilty and received the justice he deserved.
Gota love this change and hope thing. Hope they bring back more witch burnings. Because thats the kinda change that Ted Stevens received. Brought to you by the fast and furious supreme Justice department. Please report any suspicious looking republicans to the re-education czar. And I hope a polar bear poops on your chevy volt.
I do wish individual opinions would stop including all of 'us' in their rhetoric. Own your opinion.
If the prosecutor kept exculpatory evidence from your own defense team your views would probably be a bit more tempered. Bill Allen was a low-life covering his own rear-end and the U.S. Justice Department's case would have fallen apart if the defense team had been given the facts to discredit his testimony.
Did you hear all the evidence? We're you privy to all the information and facts of the case? Was he found guilty?
Nope.
So we don't know he did wrong. You can speculate with your vast ocean of information that you read from the empire but the fact remains he was guilty of nothing according to the law.
That's not even the issue these people have. His innocence or guilt has nothing to do with the only real fact, the prosecution didn't just mess up the case, they intentionally sabotaged the case by withholding information that would have discredited the star witness and didn't disclose more information that would have helped his defense.
Just look at how many people were willing to join a lynch mob at the drop of a hat! Prosecutors are not interested in justice or fairness, just whether or not they get a win. The feds are the worst, keep and eye on Florida and see another get lynched.
Did Parnell mention it was the Bush Justice Department that brought the indictment, and the Obama Justice Department that reviewed prosecutorial misconduct and recommended that the charges be dismissed?
Or, like other speakers at "rallies," did he conveniently forget to mention that fact?
Please provide your source for President Obama reviewing/recommending that charges be dismissed. As I understand it the federal court judge made this call.
Stevens was no different than any of his peers. Name a senator that is completely ethical. That's like trying to find a prime grade steak at Walmart. Things such as legal insider trading is rampant and you have the most hypocrital group of liars accusing Stevens of doing something that is now only wrong because it fits their agenda. Look at the fallout of the addition of the dem replacement. Rediculous deficits, agencies spending money out of control and narrow dem victories of failed stimulus plans and an illegal health care law. Without his leadership all Hell has broken loose. Our country is spinning out of control with no one behind the wheel!!!!!!!!
ratfishtim didn't say "President Obama", as in the president personally reviewed the case, he said "The Obama Justice Department" - as in, the justice department under the administration of the current president.
Those who attend the rally "Justice for Ted" and Captain Zero included are intellectually dishonest, ignoring the facts, and trying to rewrite the history of this great state. Uncle Ted as he has been lovingly referred to, was given a trial and found guilty. He was found guilty of failing to report in writing, on proper Senate forms, the indisputable facts that he accepted very valuable items and a major addition to his Girdwood home. Stevens was caught, prosecuted and found guilty by a jury. NOTHING that the prosecution held back would have changed the fact that Stevens knew about, and accepted the gift bribes. Information held back about Allens sex life and behaviour would not have changed the outcome. But Ted had accumulated a lot of get out of jail free cards during the years of fleecing the taxpayers. He was given a pass as well as little Benny aka: Corrupt Bastards Club leader. So try to ignore the truth foolish chumps, but Ted was found guilty of felonious acts.
Good point. Eric Holder was only three months into the job. But I seem to remember, following Ted's conviction on Oct. 27 2008 on 7 counts of making false statements, candidate Obama, and many others from both sides, demanding his resignation to "put an end to the corruption and influence peddling in Washington." (Oct. 28, 2008, Bloomberg News.)
Seems to me, though, it was only after an FBI whistle-blower, from "Operation Polar Pen", started the whole snowball rolling (following the conviction) and Holder was facing a reversal on appeal.
During this whole debacle President Obama was noticeably silent.
Senator Stephen's 'making false statements' felony conviction would have been overturned in light of Bill Allen's, the FBI's, and the U.S. Justice Department's proven fabrications.
If President Obama had a hand in righting an injustice, kudos to him and Holder. But there is no evidence of it.
As someone, who had personally observed Mr. Steven's (and, his cronies) gleefully wearing their "Corrupt Bastards" hats and jackets at the Baranof Hotel...
As someone, who had personally observed (on several occasions) "crisp, rustling" handshakes between Mr. Allen and Mr. Stevens, as well as "folded bills" being slipped surreptitiously into Mr. Steven's coat pocket by Mr. Allen...
Mr. Stevens undoubtedly did allot for Alaska, but he also (at the same time) managed to do allot for himself, his family, and his friends. Which was the collateral damage?
In the end, "Uncle Ted" was merely a man... known for both his accomplishments and for his failings - as, we all are. I don't think attempting to "whitewash" his memory is necessarily the way to go. Even great men have their weaknesses... a lesson well to remember.
Now there's a protest rally Parnell and the republicans can support- a guy who did his best to bring home the bacon and had plenty of rich friends. Not exaclty the poor and disenfranchised. Lobbyists for justice! CEO's for justice! hurrah!
How else do these politicians get to be such rich men, if they don't take money and favors ....They only have to be in office for one term to qualify for a life time pension and the best health insurance, which is like getting unemployment for the rest of your life, even when you get a new job. Ted was no different from any of the rest, he just got caught... his case was dismissed because the prosecution did not play fair.... but they did not find him 'not guilty' of the charges. It was a republican Presidents justice system that went after him, possibly because he was not afraid to cross the aisle and compromise, and was not conservative enough for them
Just so all defendants get this same consideration.. Will they prosecute all the prosecutors who used unethical tactics against defendants? ..... or just with Ted. There are many cases where witnesses have been paid in early releases or no prosecutions by being witnesses for the prosecution, ... and found to be false, ..... with the knowledge of the prosecution. They seem to be above the law and are never prosecuted for their lying coercion. It is only fair that if Ted gets this consideration so do ALL others in the same position. If not .... then shame on our judicial system.
"... Attorney General Eric Holder's move to have the conviction thrown out.
Holder made the extraordinary request in court documents filed Wednesday, citing new revelations that U.S. lawyers had withheld key evidence from Stevens' attorneys at trial.
Holder said "it is in the interest of justice" not to have a new trial. A hearing on his motion to dismiss the case is set for Tuesday in a Washington, D.C., federal court."
Happy now, Ken, there is your proof. Uninformed trolls.
If you want to give the Obama administration the credit, I have no problem with that. All I was saying is that Holder came late for the party. It took a whistleblower, a federal Judge and further investigation to wrap it all up with a neat little bow for the appeals process. What was he going to do? Fight the ruling from Federal Judge Emmet Sullivan and drag the department through months of scandal?
Everyone on top of the political foodchain knew Bill Allen, of VECO knew his character and how he conducted business. Ted's peers did not hesitate to throw him under the bus.
By the way, if charges are dropped before sentencing the government cannot retry the case.
