Juneau police say they have arrested a man on suspicion of beating up an acquaintance in a downtown apartment early Friday morning.
Marcos Galindo, 26, of California, was arrested inside the apartment in the 200 block of South Franklin Street about four and a half hours after the assault was reported at 4 a.m.
Galindo is being held in jail without bail on one count of felony third-degree assault and one count of misdemeanor fourth-degree assault.
Police said the attack left a 36-year-old male victim bloodied and swollen with multiple lacerations on the top of his head and with multiple injuries to his face.
JPD Lt. David Campbell confirmed the victim has since been treated and released from the hospital.
Campbell said police received a phone call at 4:02 a.m. from a witness near Ferry and Rawn Ways who reported a man who was “pretty beat up” and bleeding from his head. The victim had asked the witness to call an ambulance.
Police arrived on scene four minutes later, and the victim told police Galindo had beat him up.
Four hours later, at about 8:44 a.m., police executed a search warrant at the apartment where the assault took place. Police found Galindo there and arrested him. Campbell said Galindo has only been an Alaskan resident for a couple of months.
“He’s relatively new to town,” Campbell said. “Apparently he’s only been here a couple of months, so we don’t know a lot specifically about him.”
“He’s known the victim for a few months,” Campbell added.
Campbell said police found blood and signs of a struggle inside the apartment.
He did not say who owned or rented the apartment.
Campbell did not disclose a motive for the assault at this point in time, nor if any weapons were used in the attack.
“We’re still piecing together the chain of events that happened in the morning hours that led up to this assault, but we know they were both in the apartment together when the assault occurred,” Campbell said.
Alcohol was found in both their systems, Campbell said.
Galindo appeared uninjured, police said.
Galindo is to be arraigned in Juneau District Court over the weekend.
